4 Signs Your Tractor’s Diesel Particulate Filter Is Clogged
Share This

The diesel particular filter, known as the DPF, is an after-treatment device that removes diesel particulate matter from your tractor’s exhaust to reduce harmful emissions. While useful for minimizing pollution, the DPF has one major downside: it’s prone to clogging, and a clogged DPF can do a number on your tractor’s performance. Tractor owners should be aware of common signs that their tractor’s DPF is clogged so they can clean their filter and prevent damage to the engine.

Reduced Fuel Economy

Is your engine eating up fuel faster than normal? The DPF is a part of the system that guides exhaust out of your car’s engine. If it’s blocked, these fumes will have trouble exiting the engine. This prevents your engine from operating at full capacity, resulting in a noticeable decrease in fuel economy.

A Pungent Diesel Smell

Another symptom of a clogged DPF is a pungent odor coming from the exhaust. It will smell strongly of burning diesel—it’s hard to miss.

The Engine Won’t Start

Does your tractor stubbornly refuse to start? The DPF could be the cause. A clogged DPF causes exhaust fumes to build up in the engine. If your engine management unit detects a dangerous level of built-up fumes, it can enter shut-down mode and prevent you from running the engine. This can be frustrating, but ultimately, it’s for the best. If you run your engine with excess fumes present, you can irreversibly damage it.

Lowered Performance

It’s also common for the tractor to start but run poorly when you have a clogged DPF. The build-up of fumes strangles the engine and prevents it from working at full power. As a result, you may have a harder time accelerating, turning, or otherwise handling your tractor.

If you notice one or more of these signs that your tractor’s DPF is clogged, it could be time to have your DPF personally or professionally cleaned. If your DPF clogs frequently, you may want to look into having it removed. Find a qualified tractor ECU specialist in your area, and they can remove the DPF system from your tractor’s ECU. Afterward, you can remove the filter physically and bid a permanent goodbye to clogging.
