Tips and Tricks for Getting Stuck Screws Out
Share This

Screws are common mechanical fasteners that have external threads, or ridges. It can be challenging to remove screws when they become stubbornly stuck. You can save time and effort with these tips and tricks for getting stuck screws out.

Apply Steady Pressure With Screwdrivers

Apply steady pressure while turning the screwdriver and avoid applying it at an off angle which can strip the screw head or cause it to break off. Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise.

If the slots in the screw head are worn, or stripped, try using a different screwdriver to remove it. You can also tap the base of the screwdriver with a hammer to loosen any rust or debris that may be binding the screw before turning the screwdriver counterclockwise.

Improve Your Grip

You can improve your tool’s grip on the screw with lubricant, a rubber band, or steel wool. You can spray the screw with rust-combatting lubricants like WD-40. Let the lubricant sit on the screw for a few minutes, then try to remove the screw.

You can also use a rubber band or steel wool to improve your grip. Place a wide rubber band or steel wool over the screw head. Insert the screwdriver into the screw’s slot to attempt removal.

Extract With a Drill

If you can’t remove the screw with a screwdriver, try to extract it with a drill using a left-handed drill bit and set the drill in reverse.

The key difference between a right- and left-handed drill bit is that the spiral on a left-handed drill bit runs counterclockwise. Combining the counterclockwise flute of the left-handed drill bit with the tool’s reverse rotation increases the chance of success.

Applying steady pressure with the screwdriver, improving your grip, and attempting removal with a drill bit are three tricks for getting stuck screws out. Stuck screws can be a frustrating roadblock in any project, but patience, technique, and the right tools can help you overcome the problem.
