NASA's SpaceX Crew-13 mission is under way, and the agency's postlaunch news conference brought its leaders together with the crew's agencies to describe the flight, the science ahead and the road to the Moon and Mars that station research supports. The full briefing, published by NASA's official channel, is embedded above.

Crew-13 launched at 11:10 a.m. Eastern on October 1 with NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov, bound for the International Space Station for a programme of experiments and technology demonstrations. At the briefing, the agency's administrator, its human-spaceflight leadership, the station programme and SpaceX's mission management answered questions on the flight and the work ahead.

Briefings of this kind reward attention to what officials choose to quantify: docking and mission timelines, the experiment manifest, and how station research feeds the lunar programme. The questions from the press corps usually surface the schedule risks and hardware notes the prepared statements glide over, which is why the full exchange is more informative than the highlights.
