First the rain, then the baseball. After Friday night’s washout in Cleveland — the second weather disruption of the series, following Thursday’s Game 3 being moved up five hours — the American League Championship Series resumes Saturday with Game 4 at 8pm ET, and a compressed weekend that will test both teams’ pitching depth.

The postponement came about an hour after the scheduled 8:08pm first pitch, following a day of rain that turned heavy in the evening — with Rays players memorably playing catch in the outfield downpour before the call was made. Game 5 shifts to Sunday at 5pm ET, wiping out the travel day and setting up a potential four-games-in-four-days finish if the series goes the distance, according to Field Level Media’s report.

The state of play

Cleveland leads 2-1 after taking Thursday’s weather-shortened Game 3 — itself moved up five hours to dodge the forecast. The Guardians had planned a bullpen game with Shawn Armstrong opening; the Rays will send Nick Martinez on Saturday. Both staffs must now recalibrate for the squeeze — and the Brewers, who swept the Dodgers, wait rested for the winner.

The baseball weekend shares the stage with a packed NFL slate, but for Cleveland, nothing matters more than Saturday night: a win puts the Guardians one victory from the World Series.

What’s next

Saturday’s forecast is drier — clear skies and cool temperatures over Progressive Field. After two days of weather chaos, both dugouts will take it.

The bigger question is what the squeeze does to the World Series. The winner faces a Brewers team that has been resting since its sweep — while Cleveland or Tampa Bay will arrive having played up to four games in four days. Rest versus rhythm: baseball’s oldest October debate, settled this time by the rain.
