When a vaccinated DuPage County resident tested positive for measles, the health department’s response was immediate: contact tracing, public alerts and a clear message about breakthrough infections.

The resident, who had recently returned from international travel, was at O’Hare’s Terminal 5 on October 15 between 4:20 p.m. and 7 p.m. The department asked anyone there during that window to call 630-682-7400.

This is public health in action. Within days of the positive test, officials had identified the exposure window, notified the public and begun tracing contacts. It is the system working as designed.

The breakthrough question

Health officials called it a “rare breakthrough infection,” stressing that such cases are uncommon but possible after intense exposure. Illinois has 24 confirmed cases this year. The CDC’s Pennsylvania deployment shows what happens when the system is overwhelmed; DuPage shows it working.

“Vaccination continues to provide strong protection, even in a rare breakthrough case,” said Adam Forker, the department’s executive director.

What the response teaches

Speed matters. Transparency matters. The department’s quick public alert gave potentially exposed travellers the information they needed. This report has the details, and the lesson is that local health departments are the front line.

The virus was caught. The system worked.
